Canyons Women Take Third, Men Seventh at WSC Preview

WOODLAND HILLS — College of the Canyons competed at the Western State Conference (WSC) Preview meet hosted by L.A. Pierce College on Sept. 30, with both teams placing in the top seven of the field.
The women's team took third in the field of five WSC team, good for their best result yet this season, and accumulated an event score of 74. Bakersfield College (34) took first followed by Glendale College (41), Canyons (74, Oxnard College (78) and Antelope Valley College (110).
COC Sophomore Milca Osorio was instrumental to her team, taking sixth place out of a pool of 50 athletes. She recorded a time of 19:34.5 in the 5K event, outrunning her time at the Southern California Preview by a respectable 22 seconds.
Joy Nakazawa was the second Cougar to cross the finish line (22nd/21:15.6), followed by Maylani Perez (23rd/21:22), Emily Cruz (30th/23:12.2) and Trinity Winslow (31st/23:29.1).
Despite missing its top performer, the Cougars men's team placed seventh in the field of 10 WSC programs.
Bakersfield (34) took first, with Glendale (51), Moorpark College (62), Ventura College (116), Santa Monica (142), Cuesta College (163), Canyons (199), AVC, (212), L.A. Mission College (237) and Citrus College (258) following.
COC freshman Jerome Hughes was the first Cougar to cross the line at 25:28.8, good for 37th place.
Elijah Dixon (51st/26:28.6) was next to finish with Isaac Wilkinson (52nd/26:34.8) close behind. Juan Jimenez-Rojas (55th/26:43.6), Nathan Guzman (63rd/27:16) and Fernando Osorio (71st/28:04) were next for the Cougars.
Canyons will be back in action Friday, Oct. 14 at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational, in the final race before the WSC Championships set for 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at Arroyo Vista Community Park in Moorpark.
