Cougs .500 in WSC After 75-63 loss to West L.A.
Canyons rallies late, but can't cut big lead.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — A sluggish performance stalled the College of the Canyons men's basketball team in a 75-63 Valentine's Day loss to West Los Angeles College, ending its three-game winning streak.
Canyons was down by as many as 21 points during the game, as the Cougars shot only 23.1 percent in the first half, making only 6-of-23 field goals to enter the half down 41-25.
Despite the COC's shooting woes, forward Brenden Otero led the Cougars with 10 points in the opening half.
The second half saw better play from the Cougars, but COC could not dig out from the large deficit.
Midway through the second half, a brief 9-2 run cut West LA's lead to 11. Back-to-back West LA three-pointers held off the brief COC comeback and the Cougars trailed for good en route to a disappointing loss.
Ricardo Greaves provided a spark off the bench scoring nine points and grabbing 11 rebounds in just 25 minutes of action.
Forward Tullio Parry scored eight points and collected three rebounds, but fouled out after just 21 minutes of game time.
The loss takes COC's record to 14-11 overall on the season and to 6-6 against Western State Conference, South opponents with just two games remaining on the season.
The Cougars next travel to Bakersfield College at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.
