College of the Canyons broke out of a two-game slump with a convincing 68-54 victory over visiting Bakersfield College at Lee Smelser Court on Wednesday.
The Canyons (7-14, 3-4) victory served to close out the first round of Western State Conference (WSC), South Division play and helped the Cougars bounce back following consecutive road losses at Santa Monica and West L.A. College.
COC featured a balanced attack vs. the Renegades (10-11, 2-5) with Gilad Ziegel's 14 points helping to set the pace. Raz Orbach came off the bench with 11 points while Justin Perez and Wyatt Wilson each added nine points.
The Cougars found an edge at the foul line, converting on 16-of-23 attempts compared to a 5-of-12 mark from the Renegades. COC also controlled the battle of the boards with a 49-41 comparison.
Orbach and Ziegel tied for the team lead with eight rebounds, with Perez one behind at seven. Ziegel also came away with three steals on the defensive end, as did Wilson.
Despite trailing 37-20 at the break, Bakersfield battled back in the second half but never got to within single digits. Joauquin Rios and Isaiah Perry were the Renegades' two leading scorers with 11 points each.
With seven games left on the docket, Canyons next takes the court Saturday, Feb. 1, at Antelope Valley College. That game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
