The College of the Canyons men's golf team picked up right where it left off in 2014, with the Cougars — winners of five straight conference titles — opening up the start of the 2015 season with a victory on Monday.
Canyons placed first with a five-man team score of 373 in the season's first Western State Conference (WSC) tournament, played at Valencia Country Club.
Santa Barbara City College finished second at 386, while Ventura College took third with a score of 388. The eight-team field also included Glendale, Antelope Valley, Citrus, Bakersfield and Allan Hancock College.
Leading the way for the Cougars was sophomore Eric Kim, who bested the field of 47 golfers with a score of 71.
Finishing just one shot off the pace was COC sophomore Edouard Fiszel, whose score of 72 tied with Jonny Hogan of SBCC as the tournament's second place mark. Fiszel turned in a gutsy effort after reaggravating a ribcage injury with six holes remaining,
Matt Murray carded a 74 for COC, while Noa Yap's score of 76 and Braden Lewis' mark of 80 rounded out the Cougar top five.
Canyons will head up the coast for its next tourney, with SBCC hosting WSC tournament No. 2 at Alisal Ranch Golf Course on Monday, Feb. 16.
