Canyons Holds Off Ventura to win Fifth Straight Event
COC’s five-man score of 381 topped the tally of 383 by Ventura College. The Cougars have now finished first in all but two conference events this season.
Paced by the play of Daniel Taplin and Ben Campbell, College of the Canyons was able to post a two-stroke victory over runner up Ventura College to win its fifth straight conference tourney on Monday at Antelope Valley Country Club.
Taplin earned medalist honors with his round of 73. Campbell trailed his teammate by a single stroke with his final score of 74, tying with Niels Anderson of Santa Barbara City College.
COC's five-man score of 381 topped the tally of 383 by Ventura College. SBCC finished third at 393 and Citrus College was fourth at 395.
Michael Lindgren ranked third on the day for COC and eighth overall in the field of 48 with his round of 76.
Cougars Jaeyeol Kim and Travis Fay both shot a 79 to score for Canyons. Those marks tied for 15th place on the day.
COC now holds a six-point lead over Ventura in the Western State Conference standings heading into next week's WSC Finals. SBCC is third in the conference.
The Cougars, winners of seven straight WSC titles, have finished first in all but two conference events this season.
Campbell leads the conference's individual standings, with Kim and Taplin ranking third and fourth, respectively.
The 2017 WSC Finals will be played over 36 holes at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande on Monday, May 1.
