Cougars Finish Strong, Take Season-Opening Tourney

LOMPOC — College of the Canyons finished its showing at the two-day Pt. Conception Open at La Purisima Golf Course on Monday by bringing home a strong season-opening victory.

Canyons topped its closest competitor in the field by 20 strokes a day after opening up an 11-stroke advantage during the tourney's opening round.

The Cougars turned in a five-man score of 386 on day two, representing a 13-stroke improvement from Sunday's results.

COC's two-day score was 785 (399/386) placing the team ahead of runner-up Mt. San Antonio College at 805 (410/395). Fresno City College at 811 (413/398) took third place in the field of 14 competing schools. Western State Conference (WSC) foes Santa Barbara City College (824-414/410) was fourth while fifth place went to Bakersfield College (826-411/415).

Canyons was led by freshman Ethan Posthumus who took tourney medalist honors with a two-day total of 149 (72/77). His even-par score on day one helped set the place for a Cougar squad that featured three players finish in the top eight of the individual standings.

Hannes Yngve tied for fifth place with a two-day total of 155 (80/75) while Rob Scribner shared eighth-place honors at 158 (79/79).

Paul Grimonpon (161-82/79) and Hugo Boyer (162-86/76) rounded out the Canyons scores. Ben Stewart (170-86/84) also competed but had his scores dropped from the final totals.

The Cougars begin Western State Conference (WSC) play Monday, Feb. 5 at Oakmont Country Club.
