Cougars Hold Lead After Day One of SoCal Regional Championships

BAKERSFIELD — College of the Canyons stormed out to a seven-stroke lead during opening round play of the 3C2A Southern California Regional Championships at Rio Bravo Country Club on Sunday, with two Cougars placing a pair of players in the top five of the individual strandings.
Canyons (122-9), the Western State Conference (WSC) champions, turned in a five-man score of 373 to finish ahead of tourney host Bakersfield College (380), Cypres College (381), Cuyamaca College (382) and Santa Barbara City College (384) across the top five spots.
Ventura College (390), Orange Coast College (391), Mt. San Antonio College (394) and College of the Desert (414) rounded out the field of nine programs from throughout the region.
COC freshmen Ethan Posthumus and Hugo Boyer shot identical one-over-par rounds of 73 to anchor the Cougars' lineup. That result placed them in a five-way tie for fifth in the individual standings.
Similarly, it was Canyons freshmen Hannes Yngve and Owen Crockett shooting matching rounds of 75 to finish in a six-way tie for 13th in the field of 66 players.
An-Chieh Tsai (82/T-51st) had his round scratched from the Cougars' total.
Bingcheng Zeng (Riverside City College) and Tiger Tahvildari (Orange Coast College) shared day-one medalist honors at 70, coming in at two-under-par.
The 2024 3C2A Southern California Championship continue Monday, May 6, from Rio Bravo Country Club.
The Cougars will be shooting for the program's ninth SoCal Regional title. Canyons has played at every regional championship event dating back to 1995 a span of 28 straight events. The regional championship was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to cancellations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The top four teams from both the SoCal and Northern California Regional Championships will advance to play at the 2024 3C2A State Championships being held May 12-13, at Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta.
