Canyons Holds Opening-Round Lead at Pt. Conception Open

LOMPOC — College of the Canyons began its state title defense by finsihing first in opening-round action of the annual Pt. Conception Open being played Jan. 26-27, at La Purisima Golf Course.
Canyons ended the first round, which had to be extended into Monday morning due to inclement weather in the area, atop the field. The Cougars turned in a five-player score of 397 despite having to finish the Sunday morning round by playing the final two holes on Monday morning. College of the Desert (403) and Ventura College (406) joined Canyons across the top three spots.
COC featured four players in the top five of the individual standings led by sophomore Ryan Giardino's round of 76, placing him second overall just a stroke behind leader Logan Gonzalez of Ventura.
Freshman Jacques Struyf was next for the Cougars after tying for third place with his score of 77.
Ethan Posthumus and Anthony Nilson both finished the round at 78 to slot into a five-way tie for fifth place.
Carson Diaz (88-T43) was the final scorer for Canyons. Robert Scribner (92-T53) had his round scratched from the Cougars' final team tally.
Sunday's field attracted 86 players representing 13 schools from across the region.
Canyons, which won the Western State Conference (WSC), Southern California Regional and 3C2A State Championships, was joined at the event by WSC opponents Ventura, Citrus, Glendale, Allan Hancock and Bakersfield College.
Final round action of the 2025 Pt. Conception Open concludes Tuesday, Jan. 27, weather permitting.
The Cougars begin the WSC portion of their schedule Monday, Feb. 3 at Oakmont Country Club in the conference event hosted by Glendale College.
