Canyons Track & Field Gets Going at WSC Prelims & Finals

LANCASTER — College of the Canyons competed on day one of the Western State Conference (WSC) Prelims & Championships, with the Cougars seeing a combined seven athletes qualify to compete in the conference finals on April 26.
COC sophomore Zeniah Ellsworth advanced to the conference finals in both of her events after clocking a time of 25.59 in the 200m to finish fourth and following up with a third place run in the 400m at a pace of 57.67.
Elsewhere on the women's team, freshman Katelyn Catu is moving on to the finals after her run of 2:29.34 in the 800m.
For the men's team sophomore Sam Regez was the lone event winner, taking first place in the 1,500m at 4:07.80 and will now be among the front runners to win a conference title during the final heat. Cesar Tobar will also have a chance to run in the finals of the 1,500m after finishing seventh with a time of 4:10.02.
Jerome Hughes ran second in the 800m at 1:58.09 and must also be considered in the running for a conference title. Jack Eaton clocked a time of 2:01.29 in the 800m to also move on to the final heat.
Lyndon Ravare will continue to compete in the 100m after his ninth-place result that came at a time of 11.30.
Additionally, freshman Travis Royal placed sixth in the finals of the men's javelin with a throw of 44.64m/146' 5 and has already secured his spot at next month's 3C2A Southern California Championships meet.
Damon Barkus placed eighth in the long jump (6.49m/21' 3.5") with teammate JT Saenz close behind in ninth place (6.48m/21' 3.25"). Both will now wait to see if their marks qualify them to compete at the SoCal Championships.
The Cougars will continue to compete on day two of the WSC Prelims & Championships, which shifts to Bakersfield College on Friday, April 26.
In addition to the student-athletes moving on to the finals in their respective events, Canyons will field entrants in the men's shot put, triple jump, 5,000m, 4x100 relay and both the men's and women's 4x400 relays.
