College of the Canyons saw three athletes advance to the 3C2A State Championship Meet in 2024. At the state meet it was sophomore Jerome Hughes working for eighth place in the 800m with a time of 1:56.59, earning him honors on the 3C2A All-State Team. Sophomore Sam Regez claimed 12th in the 1500m with a time of 4:23.30 and freshman JT Saenz jumped to a mark of 13.66m/44’9.75” in the triple jump to nab the eighth-place finish. Saenz also was an All-State honoree. All three athletes qualified for the state event at the 3C2A SoCal Regional Championships. Regez is set to continue his career at the University of Portland. Prior to SoCal Regionals the Cougars competed at the Western State Conference (WSC) Championships where Hughes and Freshman Nathaniel Wilkinson won individual conference titles, Hughes in the 800m and Wilkinson in the 3000m steeplechase. The Cougars also saw 16 other athletes qualify for the SoCal Regionals and receive All-WSC honors. Among those were sophomore Zeniah Ellsworth, finishing runner up in the 400m and fifth in the 200m and freshman Katelyn Catu placing seventh in the 800m. Both athletes were joined by Kaiya Cortinasand Emily Cruz to advance to regional prelims in the 4x400m relay.

College of the Canyons sent two more athletes to the CCCAA State Championship Meet where sophomores Layne Buck jumped to a third-place finish and Milca Osorio ran to a seventh-place finish in the 10,000m race. Buck’s long jump mark of 7.10/23’3.5” was only half an inch shy of his personal best, which he used to claim the conference title at the Western State Conference (WSC) Championships a few weeks prior. Buck also competed in the triple jump event placing eighth at the state meet with a mark of 13.66m/44’9.75”. Osorio’s fifth-place run in the 10,000m (39:39.24) rounded out her career as her fourth State Championship event as a Cougar, including cross country state events. The duo was named to the All-State team and Buck also received JC All-American honors. At the WSC Championships Canyons saw personal bests from 18 student-athletes to conclude the regular season.

College of the Canyons track & field officially returned to action at the Western State Conference (WSC) Relays on Feb. 18, 2022 nearly two years after having its 2020 and 2021 seasons cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both teams would go on to place third at the WSC Inland Meet on April 1. Later that week, sophomore Matt Ballentine placed fifth at the at the two-day SoCal Hep/Dec Championship to claim to a spot at the CCCAA Track & Field State Championships. At the WSC Prelims hosted by Canyons, Ballentine (javelin) and Layne Buck (long jump) both took home individual conference championships. The event inside Cougar Stadium also provided an opportunity for the program to host a special Track & Field Alumni Day. The following week at the WSC Championship meet both the men’s and women’s squads finished eighth in the respective team standings but had several individual student-athletes qualify for the CCCAA Southern California Championships. At the regional championships, it was Milca Osorio (5,000m/10,000m) and Ballentine(decathlon/javelin) qualifying to compete at the CCCAA Track & Field State Championships. The duo qualified for three top-five finishes at the state championships. Osorio ran to a fifth-place finish in the 10,000m by clocking a time of 38:58.91. The next day she finished seventh in the 5,000m with a time of 18:49.26. Ballentine claimed third in the javelin after throwing for a mark of 53.22m (174' 7"). That position also earned Ballentine JC All-American honors in the event. Ballentine later placed fifth in the decathlon after totaling 6,009 event points, also representing a personal best for the first-year track & field athlete. As a result of their performances both Osorio and Ballentine earned All-State Team honors.

College of the Canyons athletics programs did not compete in 2021 due to cancellations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
2020

The College of the Canyons men’s and women’s track programs competed in just five events before having the remainder of its season cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis. The Cougars took part in their last event on March 7 but were well on their way to another memorable season with a talented roster of 35 student-athletes including 21 hailing from SCV schools. COC’s men’s team won the first Western State Conference (WSC) meet of this season on Feb. 21 at Bakersfield College, with the women’s team placing fifth at the same event. The men’s & women’s programs combined to win 12 individual events across five meets. Cougars student-athletes also finished runner-up in 19 individual events during the shortened season. Both programs had the opportunity to compete against four-year schools during the annual Beach Opener hosted by CSULB, in what proved to be the final meet of the season. Conference and statewide awards were not presented for the 2020 season.

College of the Canyons saw three individual student-athletes qualify for competition at the 2019 CCCAA State Championship meet, highlighted by freshman Jordan Palmer who finished as runner-up in the men’s shot put event. Palmer turned in a phenomenal freshman campaign, winning both Western State Conference (WSC) and CCCAA Southern California Regional titles en route to being named the co-WSC Field Athlete of the Year. His throw of 15.20m (49’ 10.5”) was just six inches off the state championship mark. Palmer also fared well in the discus event, finishing second in the WSC, fourth in Southern California and 11th in the state. Sophomore Delon Buncio also had a memorable season, finishing fourth at the state championship meet with a throw of 52.30m (171’ 7”) in the men’s discus. He also placed eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.67m (21’ 10.75”). Buncio also won an individual WSC championship in the javelin with his throw of 55.34m (181' 5"). COC freshman Jacore Johnson brought home dual conference titles in the 200m (21.752) and 400m (48.79), and later joined teammates Buncio, Aaron Sooknanan and Gabriel Halekakis to help the 4x400m relay team (3:20.54) bring home another conference title in that event. COC sophomore Celeste Gonzalez was the lone state meet qualifier for COC’s women’s team, later running to a 12th place finish in the 1,500m (5:17.69). In the team standings, COC’s men’s squad placed third in the conference while the women’s team was 10th. The Cougars had a combined 23 student-athletes earn All-WSC track & field honors, with five earning a spot on the Academic All-State team.

College of the Canyons track & field brought home three All-American designations and set a new school record to end its season at the CCCAA Track & Field State Championships hosted by Bakersfield College. In all, the Cougars sent 12 student-athletes to compete at the state meet. COC sophomore Marcel Sylvester finished third in the high jump (2.00m) to present the top individual finish for Canyons. That effort earned Sylvester JC All-American honors. COC's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams also had great runs at the state championship meet. The foursome of Leo Lambert, Slade Cavallaro, Blake Beeler and Calel Christian finished fourth in the 4x100m (41.69) to also earn JC All-American status. The team had previously won the Western State Conference (WSC) title in the event before placing second at the CCCAA Southern California Regional Championships. The 4x400m combination of Lambert, Steven Arrington, Beeler and Cavallaro then posted a school-record (3:13.62) to finish fourth and claim JC All-American Honors. COC freshman Takaira Beard placed eighth in the heptathlon with 3,779 event points. Beard also took seventh in the high jump (1.55m), after having won a WSC title in the same event. Lambert also brought home a WSC title in the 400m (48.97) while Cavallaro was the conference champion in the 400h (54.52). In the conference team competition, Canyons took seventh place, while the women's team finished sixth. COC also had four student-athletes named to the California Community College Cross Country & Track Coaches Association (5CTCA) Academic All-State Team, with sophomores Celine Whitman, Garrett Noltemeyer, Maxwell Hudson and Blake Beeler all honored for their academic success. At season’s end the Cougars saw seven athletes transfer to compete at the next level.

The College of the Canyons women's team finished as runner up in the Western State Conference, while having individual student-athletes combine to win three conference titles. Sophomore Jasmine Hall picked up conference titles in the high jump & javelin events, while sophomore Dana Bowers won the shot put. COC sophomore Díani Ellis also won a CCCAA Southern California title and CCCAA State Championship in the 3,000m steeplechase event. In doing so, she became just the second individual state champion in COC women's track & field history. In all, the women’s team brought home 23 all-conference designations and had seven athletes qualify for completion at the CCCAA State Championship meet. Ellis (3,000m steeplechase) and sophomores Jasmine Hall (heptathlon, high jump) and Kaitlyn Matthews (high jump) each earned JC All-American honors in their respective events. The COC men's track & field team finished in sixth place in the WSC. COC had six student-athletes advance to compete at the CCCAA State Championships, highlighted by sophomore Zachary Larson who finished eighth in the decathlon. The Cougars also had 24 athletes earn All-WSC accolades for the men’s team.

COC head coach Lindie Kane and her staff led the track & field program to another successful season in 2016, with both the men’s and women’s teams finishing in second place in the WSC before seeing several athletes advance to the CCCAA regional and state meets. COC sent a total of 25 student-athletes to WSC Finals, 13 to the CCCAA SoCal Regional Championships and eight to the CCCAA State Championship meet. The Cougars won individual conference titles in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase (Jason Hillquist) and women’s 5,000m (Jessica Ruiz), 3,000m steeplechase (Amanda De Jesus), high jump (Kaitlyn Matthews), long jump (Marissa Kneisel) and javelin (Dana Bowers). Canyons also had student-athletes win regional titles in the women’s long jump (Kneisel), 3,000m Steeplechase (Ruiz) and men’s 3,000m Steeplechaase (Hillquist). At the state meet Hillquist ran to a State Championship in the 3,000m Steeplechase and was named a JC All-American in the event. Kneisel, Matthews and Ruiz were all named JC All-Americans in their respective events. At season’s end the program had five student-athletes commit to continue their careers at the next level. Included in the group of signees were sophomores James Chevious (Northern Arizona University), Carson Lysik (UC Santa Cruz), Cole Mears (UC San Diego) and Ethan Walker (Utah Valley University) and Tisian Nealy (University of St. Mary).

The College of the Canyons track & field program completed another successful season that was highlighted by the Cougars winning the first women’s Western State Conference (WSC) track & field title in school history. The men’s team, meanwhile, came up just short in attempting to repeat as WSC champions by finishing in second place. In addition, a combined 11 student-athletes from the men’s and women’s teams qualified for 13 events for the CCCAA State Championships. Ethan Walker was crowned a SoCal regional and a state champion in the 3,000 m steeplechase in addition to his SoCal title in the 10,000 m. His performances in both events earned him JC All-American selections. He also picked up a third JC All-American selection in the 5,000 m event. Freshman Mikala Fairchild was the top finisher for the women’s team at the state championships after finishing second in the 1,500 m and third in the 5,000 m — while also setting a school record in the event. She also earned JC All-American selections in both events. Freshman Samiyah Hawkins set a school record in the discus with a distance of 40.97 meters earning her a JC All-American selection in that event.

The College of the Canyons men’s and women’s track and field team finished in sixth and 10th place, respectively, during the 2013 season. Individually, the squad did very well, with freshman Tim White bringing home a conference championship in the triple jump and a second-place finish in the high jump. Seven other Cougars came in third place in their respective events, including sophomore Nouneh Assadourian who brought home two third places in the long and triple jump. White’s season didn’t end at the conference championships, as he would go on to win a Southern California Championship and a state championship in the triple jump. The WSC Field Athlete of the Year and JC All-American then went on to win the USA Junior National Championship in the triple jump with a school record leap of 53 feet, 1 inch. White is the first COC track and field student-athlete to win a national championship at the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championship. White was joined by freshman Anthony Fowler who competed in the 400-meter run.
