Canyons Track & Field Advances to SoCal Finals in Five Events

CERRITOS — College of the Canyons track & field will compete at least another week with the Cougars combining to qualify for the finals of the 3C2A Southern California Championships in five events.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Katelyn Catu, Kaiya Cortinas, Emily Fairbanks and Zeniah Ellsworth is moving on to the finals after placing eighth at a time of 4:12.59 at the Southern California Regional Prelims held Friday, May 3 at Cerritos College.
Ellsworth and Catu also competed in individual events for the Lady Cougars.
Catu ran 12th in the 800m with the freshman posting a time of 2:24.94. Ellsworth finished 10th in both the 200m (25.36) and 400m (1:00.16).
COC's men's 4x400 team of Heath Arceneaux, JT Saenz, Lyndon Ravare and Jerome Hughes is also moving on to the regional finals after clocking a time of 3:22.95 at Friday's prelims.
Saenz also placed ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.69m/44' 11" to claim his spot at next week's SoCal Regional Finals meet.
Same goes for sophomore Jerome Hughes who ran third in the 800m at a pace of 1:56.60 and will now run again at the regional finals.
COC sophomore Sam Regez is also moving on after clocking a time of 4:03.81 and placing sixth in the 1500m.
Elsewhere for the Cougars it was Lyndon Ravare in the 100m (15th/11.02) and Nathaniel Wilkinson in the 3,000m steeplechase (10:01.28).
In the field events, COC's Damon Barkus competed in both the triple jump (16th/12.58m/41' 3.25") and long jump (26th/5.98m/19' 7.5"), with Travis Royal in the javelin (13th/44.66m/146' 6").
The men's 4x100 relay team of Da'Marrie Smith, Alex Megas, Saenz and Ravare were clocked at 42.96 to finish 13th.
The finals of the 3C2A Southern California Regional Championships will be held Friday, May 10, at Cerritos College.
