2018 College of the Canyons Softball News

COC head coach John Wissmath just wrapped a season in which he won his 300th career game at the college and guided the Cougars to a Western State Conference, East Division championship.

The Cougars (28-16, 16-0) held an early lead in game one but eventually lost the best-of-three series 2-0.

The best-of-three series gets underway 7 p.m. Friday at the Mt. SAC softball stadium.

The All-American designation comes on the heels of Chatman earning conference Player of the Year and All-State Team Honors.

No. 8 Canyons (28-14, 16-0) swept No. 9 Cerritos College 2-0 in its best-of-three series to get the first round playoff win.

COC and Cerritos will begin its three-game series at 2 p.m. Friday, May 4. General admission is $12 and $8 for students and staff with ID, senior citizens and children under 12 years old.

Chatman is a California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association (3CFCA) All-State Team honoree, while Ludy was named an All-SoCal selection for a second time.

Chatman is one of 11 Cougars to earn All-WSC honors this season.

COC finishing the conference schedule undefeated is a feat that the program had not accomplished since 2013.

COC is 15-0 vs. WSC, East Division opponents with one conference game remaining on the schedule.

The conference championship is the 15th in program history and the seventh under COC head coach John Wissmath.

Canyons (22-11, 13-0) made short work of L.A. Mission, needing just five innings to win its fourth straight game and remain perfect vs. conference opponents.

Canyons (20-11, 11-0) scored eight runs in the first and never looked back to win its third straight.

COC freshman Sammie Burleson scored from third base on a passed ball to bring the Cougars spilling out of the dugout in celebration.

The two teams played five scoreless innings before the Mounties were able to push one across for the 1-0 win.

COC cleanup hitter Jordan Vallejo added to the attack with a game-high four RBIs, to up her team-leading total to 29.
